Sure, it's okay if players are amused for 5 minutes with blaster 1-hit kills or whatever ... The reason the X server has a long history of being disdained is that some new players would join the X server first. Their first experience would be its debased imitation of Tremulous. Thereafter, if they did not quit immediately, such players were sometimes never able to learn to play on normal servers, so the X server had an effect of decreasing the playerbase of trem.

By all means good luck with your graphic designs and so on. X server background not hurting anything. On the other hand, if you were designing gameplay...
