Okay, but we all agree that Las Gun is a terrible name, right?

Re: Weapon Names
yeah... same here...

It's very original, although it won't be in this game. But lots of games has a weaponed named "rifle" or "assault rifle" or "machinegun" so it doesn't really matter in my opinion.
Also, trem's chaingun looks like a gatling gun rather, although the actual barrels don't look like they shoot bullets. They're trapezium-shaped from my eyes.
I'll edit kenur's quote for my point of view:
KenuR-edited wrote:Worst to "Okay":
Las gun (dafaq? At least put "Las" in full caps, and since when does light emit shitloads of knockback? In real life, if it did, well the enemy is most likely to explode from over-thermal absorption and sudden expansion then pushed back a little)
Lucifer Cannon (the full name, the only reference i can think of is that lucifer made it, but it emits blaster-like projectiles, and lucifer emits flames, in a way it's like the "dominator" gun from phyco-pass - it doesn't dominate, but its firepower is variable from the opponent's "potential danger rating" of some sort)
Rifle ("Rifle" can be something like a bolt action rifle from WW2, or it can be a long sub-machine gun, or it can be a semi-auto etc. and the name is too short)
Chaingun (Stated above)
Grenade (Can be exchanged for something like "Drop and Run bomb of some sort" as the throwing speed isn't much faster than running speed)
Flamethrower (Meh.)
Mass Driver (Shoots masses of radio active particles, but in real life it is either "critical mass - therefore causes radioactive explosion" or "just radioactive" and to cause a critical mass to occur, well you're gonna require a decent amount of mass. Most likely, the compression/thrust in the gun itself would cause the reaction in the first place.)
Pulse rifle (Unoriginal, but sensible)
Shotgun (Unoriginal, but sensible)
Painsaw (Original, but unoriginal)
But coming up with names sure is a hard task. I wonder who converted the Tyrant's name to "Tyrant" after it was named "Big Mofo" back in the old days...

Re: Weapon Names
This is slightly off-topic but might help. By the time I wrote the French translation (I’m French), I had that feeling that some of the weapon names were kinda out of place. So I adapted some of the names to best fit the actual weapons:
• the blaster sounds like a too much powerful name for such a weak weapon. I translated it to pistolaser (laser pistol) ;
• what is the rifle having to do with what’s in the game ? It’s either too generic or not good. I translated it to mitraillette (submachine gun) ;
• the construction kit sounds like a good name but the buildings aren’t sold as kit, do they? Good name but doesn’t fit with the actual construction process in the game in my opinion. (French has the same kit word, so I took it as is, kit de construction.)
Other names like the pain saw, las gun (unsure, I took it as a short for laser gun), mass driver, pulse rifle and lucifer cannon are creative and I like that. Despite these are quite hard to translate (I may have to rework some ), they all sound pretty cool to me. Especially the lucifer cannon and the pulse rifle. Like futuristic weapons coming right from an SF book.
The remaining shotgun and flame thrower are actual weapons and fit what’s in game so these are okay to me.

They probably are otherwise it would be hard to build them.

Re: Weapon Names
I took it as the gun is the kit itself when I saw the title for the first time.
Also, usually names aren't translated, unless the language uses a different form of writing/chars/whatever-you-call-it.
For example, the random jap symbols in my avatar above the little girl hitting a frankensteing guy with as starfish is actually my in-game name using the japanese chars that I ripped off translate.google.com. The sounds aren't identical, but they are at least in a way the Japanese people can read. In romanji, it is pronounced as "Kontora ?? Vairuse" or "kohn-tor-rah vye(vai)-roo-seh" hence my other alias (for fun) in-game is Kontora|*VairuSe.
But if you do still want to translate them...

They still can be translated. Lucifer is actually a name of the devil, you could rename it to the "Gun/Cannon of the Devil" before you translated it.
Mass driver is a portable particle accelerator that shoots somewhat useless radioactive (at least in reality, it damages long term not short term) particles at blazingly fast speeds. "Mass" is related to "weight" in a way, although "weight" is the effect of gravity on mass. "Driver" obviously "drives" the particle forward. You may want to come up with a different term.
"Pulse" can be related to short bursts of energy. The heart emits pulses which can be detected by those hospital instrument things.
"Pain" saw's "Pain" should be easy to translate. Saw of pain. Saw of terror maybe, if you think that is better.
"Las" from "Las Gun" should (not said) be part of an acronym from the well known "LASER" that you mentioned. According to wikipedia.org it means "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation" which doesn't really make sense. Let's keep its nickname with the lowercase "as" at least until we change the name.
As for the rest you should know what they are.
Also, about the "rifle" - I agree. Generally rifles are single tap fires or bursts.. Maybe "Assault Rifle" would be better. I guess submachinegun will do as well.

Re: Weapon Names
We could name them after their current sounds...
Lasgun: "sha-sha gun" (makes the sha-sha sound)
Blaster: "piu piu pistol" (" ")
Lcannon: "BOOM....TSSSSH" (" ")
Flamer: "Froom....shhh" (" ")
Chaingun: "tickticktick" (" ")
Dretch: "tsk tsk" (" ")
As for aliens...
Dragoon: "Super Camel" (It's a camel! No jokes!)
Marauder: "Stealin' Polar Bear" (Marauder = Pirate | Taunt = Baby Polar Bear, no jokes)
There are many more ways we can name them. These are just the most rediculous "suitable" ones I came up with.
Actually, we should make some comic strips. Chessguy made some impressive ones for tremulous:
oops... There i go again, going offtopic...
