Defense computer

Post by kharnov »

The defense computer is used to coordinate the defense capabilities of the human base. In addition to warning of attacks, the defense computer will provide a healing rate to human buildings that surround it, and this healing rate will stack if additional defense computers are built. While the gameplay role of the defense computer is still in flux, we'd very much like to get around to modeling it.

If this model interests you, have at it! Textures will need to be 1024 squared for diffuse, and will also require normal and specular maps. A gloss map is optional. The target poly range is between 5-7k tris, but you can overshoot or undershoot this where appropriate. It does not need to be animated.

From my current pespective I would say that it's likely that the defense computer will only keep its role of repairing buildables. My personal dream for this would be a bot-control station that hosts one repair bot (Doom 3 sentry bot style). This would require the bot to be modeled/textured/animated, too, so this is something we could assign after we have the more important models done. In the meantime it would be nice if the defense computer already had some sort of bot-bay, where the bot returns for being repaired and where new bots spawn a while after the current bot got destroyed.

Do you guys know the drd's from farscape? Having something like that that repairs stuff would be cool. http://farscape.wikia.com/wiki/Diagnostic_Repair_Drone

Maybe. While I agree that the defense computer is pretty useless and likely will not have a place in Unvanquished, it would be nice to have something that also does automatic repair. Janev's suggestion could possibly fill in the gap...

We are not yet sure if we want this structure, so I set the thread status to draft.

May be a small structure that houses and controls a squadron of small repair bots perhaps.
