Battle Suit (2)

Post by Viech »

The battlesuit is the ultimate human armor. Heavy and expensive, it protects the entire body from a wide variety of alien attacks and provides some defense against poison. While horizontal mobility is not fully impaired by the battlesuit, the human is no longer able to crouch. A human wearing a battlesuit also has better aim while using a chaingun due to a reduction in recoil.

This model will require all of the animations possessed by the human, but for the modeler, the following applies: textures should be 2048 for the diffuse, and it will also require normal, specular, gloss, and optionally glow maps assuming you want to add some glowing bits. Target poly range is 6-8k, but this can be overshot if you absolutely can't get it lower.

If you want to, make the battlesuit even heavier than in the concept, since we are going to add a medium armor and we want to have a siginifcant visual difference between light, medium and heavy armor (aka battlesuit). If you need a new sketch for this, say so and we can reassign this to another concept artist.

Status changed to draft since we might use the Battlesuit concept for the Medium Armour and create an even heavier Battlesuit instead.

Reopened, we decided the battlesuit doesn't need to be much heavier than this (but still can overshoot the concept a little). We would be especially happy if you could make the chest region so that it fits both male and female troopers without further modification. This probably requires a little more bulk there than on the concept.

Two questions for Viech:

1.) How will we handle the suit with regards to the male and female soldiers? Just use the same model but scaled slightly different? If we make two separate models, this will obviously lead into two separate animation processes, which is not desirable.

2.) For first-person, how will we handle the hands? What are the specifications for them? It might be possible to get away with retexturing the current human hands, considering that the battlesuit doesn't have a lot of armor on the forearms and hands.

The battlesuit should be unisex, so the chest area needs to be bulky enough to suit the female body (→ deviation from the concept). The female model seems to have long legs, so I hope that her body height will match that of the male. If there's a strong difference we might need to improvise (e.g. by scaling the battlesuit ingame) – or maybe no one would even notice.

I think the current concept easily allows more bulk in the chest region:

This seems to be even more breast clearance than we need. lhdc should have a look at the female model thread.

Retrexturing wouldn't work since the texture maps will unwrap differently and we can't paint the normal map from hand. It would be ideal if the battlesuit gloves weren't too far from the regular hands, geometry wise (so something like heavy riot police or military gloves). We could then later modify the high poly model of the regular hands to match the new gloves, then bake it down on the same low poly version we currently use for the first person hands. This would allow us to reuse both the model and most importantly the weapon animations.

Definitely a good start! I would suggest making the shoulder armor a little bulkier. That's the male soldier underneath, right?

Looks like a very good start to me. Let's see if you finish this model in three days, too.
