the | is not a valid character for the ingame irc function is this a bug?

Not just '|', but some other chars too.
It is a bug and it will be fixed soon.
UPD: fixed in latest git.

i get this in my console
]/cl_irc_nickname |XAX|SHOVELL
]/irc_connect
...IRC: connecting to server
...IRC: rejected due to mostly unusable player name
...IRC: disconnected from server
EDIIT:
this seems to have been caused by /cl_irc_override_nickname 1 changed to 0 and it works
Thats probably because the IRC server in question doesn't allow you to have | in your nickname.
Freenode does (remember, RFC 2812).
To be fixed soon.
UPD: fixed in the latest git. Urp, this code was so broken.
Is the default now freenode? earlier it wasn't
It now is. The channel is #unv-lobby.
