I had a couple of other ideas but they don't fit well into that square footprint, or they just look to weak.
So I came up with this, mostly inspired by cranes and mobile military stuff that needs to be set up in unknown terrain.
The fluted areas just above the base could use some trims where they touch the rotating body. Currently it looks like they would scratch the body instead of letting it smoothly rotate.
I'm mostly done with this, I will add some more details to specific areas later on in photoshop. I'm too lazy right now to model every screw,seam etc.
There are only some minor things left to do, but after that I can start the lowpoly.
A right quantum leap over the old model, this is. Also, I don't think there should be an issue with the poly count even if you made some of the smaller bevels into actual geometry in the low poly.
