Female Soldier: Silhouette

Post by Redsky »

Creating high quality game character model has been something I was aiming to do for quite some time. I admit it's been one of the reasons I returned here. I do understand progress on current model is on temporary hold - it's not my intention to block or interfere with it in any way. I really wish the best for it.

I'm planning to go through the entire creative process including designing, sculpting, retopo, texture baking and painting and I would like all of You to tag along with me on this ride. So if you want to leave your impact on design please help me hammer out the general look first.

Silhouette
Edit No. 1

It's what is recognized first at a glance and it's good to be sending clear visual message at that very first milliseconds.
At this stage we'll pick 3 designs, expend on them a little bit and choose one that will go to finals.
Drawing this silhouettes I had Unvanquished Backstory in mind(although I think it has some issues).

How:

  1. choose 3 you like best and...

  2. post notes of what you find the most appealing in them?

  3. what you dislike / leaves you most unaffected in them?

  4. would you apply any other changes to them?

  5. ... profit ;)

The attachment conceptSheet01.jpg is no longer available

Few words about silhouette concepts:

  1. more of knight feel to it, heavy armor; also that are long hair not hood

  2. quakish look; gas mask

  3. armadillo armor

  4. armor plates attached in such way that there is a gap between armor and body

  5. thick jumpsuit - armor could bolted in it

  6. marvel like tight costume; utility belts on thighs; upper body armor

  7. half transparent plastic helmet; real fusion of machine and human

  8. armor plates & tattered uniform over it

  9. mechanical elements; clean uniform; armor on upper body shaped like a lifejacket

Thanks for participation :)

Edit 1: Hope you'll edit your posts too add extra detail rather then double post. The exception is would be answering or commenting other's posts - I would recomend starting such post with quote to avoid confusion. Let's keep this thread clean and readable. Thanks:)
I also don't worry about long hair that much. There are ways to make them look cool and animate them with bones.

8 and 9 are quite awesome. 2 appeals to me too, as far as some hair sticks out of the gas mask at the back of it (I do like long hair in females).

These are good concepts. My thoughts on them:

I would suggest short hair on the female model because long hair will be static and thus look awkward.
In terms of armor, I think #1 has the best looking silhouette armor in terms of our game.

So, my three:

#3: Short hair is good. The armor looks clean.
#8: I think this is the coolest one, but the long hair will make it look awkward.
#9: Kinda looks techno-cyberish. Would be an interesting look for tremgirl.

  1. good, long hair is not so good. maybe with a plait?
  2. looks to much cyborg for me
  3. good
  4. the boots looks like fantasy
  5. good
  6. Dreadlogs? no :o
  7. Hair looks best . but to much cyborg.
  8. This looks cool but the Outlaw style diden't match the theme ?
  9. The arm right Arm (without weapon) looks a bit strange.

I would take 1. legs and arms, 7. middle and Head

Key word here is ‘practical’.

Debian and Ubuntu packages (squeeze, wheezy, sid; 12.04, 12.10, 13.04) may work on derivatives

OFFEND! … no, that's not right… ATTACK!

I gave my feedback on the channel yesterday, but I'll also go with choice 3.

I've been talking on irc with Stalker and showed him silhouettes. Since he's been with unv forever I wanted to know what he thinks. This is, in a nutshell, what he said:
My picks are: #3, #4 and #8
I like the simplicity of #3 but feel it might benefit a bit more from armour on the arms like #8 and perhaps #8 style hip pouches.
I like #4 because the armour looks all crazy and pointy. I think that design looks pretty cool and wouldn't add anything to it.
I can't really think of anything to change on #8 either

To throw in some more feedback, here's what I've said, more or less.

3 probably works the best. Simple uniform, short hair, looks like she'd be easy to model. Looks like a female soldier. Likewise, 5 isn't a bad choice, since she'd be very similar to 3, but with some ammo packs on her. If you want to add more detail, then got with 5.

Even though I think the wires on 7 clash with the appearance of the male trooper's combat uniform, I really like the hairstyle. Maybe the hair of 7 on the body of 3 or 5?

could you reply with something that is more 'practical' - I need your favorite 3 designs + extra upgrades to make them cooler

I don't know what's that myth about long hair that it can't bee done to make them look good in a game.
It can be done if you know how.

I'm sure the model itself will look nice, but when it is animated, the hair will not move naturally with the model (or it will be much harder to do)
