Idea: can we keep the teeth on the blade and only have the energy effect display when it's active, for performance reasons?

Don't worry about performance: If the effect was expensive we would need to change it, especially when it only happens during combat. The thing at the front is supposed to be the energy generator, having teeth on it would look odd.
