Ideas for new UI

Post by Gireen »

As you might know we will replace the complete user interface. ( every menu, dialogue and hud)
Now is a good time to summarize all ideas and suggestions.
What do you like or hate on the Interface of Unvanquished/Tremulous or other Games?
Witch features do you miss?

a few examples:
I want
a history in the Serverbrowser

circle menu's
for build/buy/evolve

easy visible game informations
how much time is left, the gamemode, if it's sudden death, map rotation

a minimap

interface for demo playback

i don't like
to use the mouse arrow ingame
except options menu

ps. keep the bold text short and clear. links to existing discussions are great.

fear ma engrish :granger:

Circle menus are awesome. One of their biggest advantage is that they can be configured for use in three distinct ways which are all very efficient:

  1. Hold a key (menu opens) → Use mouse to click on an entity (action executes, menu closes)
    Releasing the key cancels.

  2. Hit a key (menu opens) → Use number key to select an entity or use mouse to click on it (action executes, menu closes)
    Hitting the key again cancels.

  3. Hold a key (menu opens) → Use analog stick to point in the direction of an entitiy → Release Key (action executes, menu closes)
Releasing the key while analog stick is centered cancels.

A good looking example from CS: GO, displaying your current gear when you don't select an item, displaying the items stats if you do:

mm circle menus would be nice. The CS:GO layout is probably the most efficient as well as best presented one I have seen!
Personally I think that when you join a game, rather than pressing 'fire' it automatically takes you to the team select menu. And also, I noticed that the alien team is initially highlighted in that menu, whereas I think none should be highlighted. It's only a small change, but ultimately many small changes will enhance the overall satisfaction.
A minimap is much needed! :)
And I like the idea of server information. Possibly if you click on a server, it will display the information in a window to the right.

A clutter-free HUD
A server browser with more space (like I did in TremFusion)
A progress bar for downloads
More assets (images, sounds)

IMHO a circle menu if good when ingame but has no real use for the spectator menus: they provide quick access to things in the middle of a battle but have no added value except the wow in the other cases.

edit: fixed a typo

I mentioned something like this in the past. Although, i originated my idea from L4D's chat menu (hold z/x/c and use the mouse to navigate, and let go of that z/x/c to initiate its function)
