Instead of having to use console or text editor to setup binds, have some form of menu system to assign bind to each key. Also, list all the available binds in the menu so that we don't have to search them in google.

Yes, I thought that's already implemented/pretty obvious (I'm too lazy to compile Unvanquished now).

Re: Keyboard layout proposal
Only the basic binds are on the menu, (movement, attack, use armory/evolve, etc) not the complex multiple binds per key or say binds.

Re: Keyboard layout proposal
I think one layout we can all (most) of us agree on is the 1-0 = Class binds thing.
One other suggestion i have is my up/down/left/right armour binds, although people who actually turn left/right using keyboard arrows will have to use another layout...
Also, like the vsay menu, we could use something similar for the build menu. Amiright?

I hope this is a joke because it really is not that hard to use.
The only binds I had changed where the ones Pan61 has (I'm not sure if his is an edited binds.cfg I posted a while ago on aa forums or not, it looks very similar).
I for one disagree with some of your proposed binds.
Re: Keyboard layout proposal
whacked layout's.
some make some sense others are just weird.
so all you can really do is give advice to layouts for people.
yeah some might be better or worse but end of the day its personal choice.
i personally built my bindings in trem and took weeks before i got used to them but i remember useing.
1-9 for humans
g-h-j-k-v- for aliens
and almost never used binds to build.. other the get a conkit.

Like kharnov said, a better interface is being worked on. When I say "worked on", I mean we're working on integrating libRocket, which would then let us actually get to the part where we make the GUIs and do all that fun stuff, but right now it's code work. (Creating user interfaces with what we have now basically sucks, which is the reason for a move to libRocket.)
Once that is done, the option to create binds with configuration files very likely will not go away.

Re: Keyboard layout proposal
Don't forget we can compress more into binds.
My "K" in unvanquished now allows me to go normal marauder if I hold shift while pressing it.
So
g-h-j-k-l
isn't such a bad idea. Just hold "shift" to go standard, or maybe adv.
Wait, did you say "v"???
