Are you running the updater (UnvanquishedUpdater.exe) or the engine (daemon.exe) directly?

Edit: I removed the duplicate thread.

I believe this is because of the updater's graphics requirements (e.g. https://doc-snapshots.qt.io/qt5-5.15/qt ... ments.html). There are a couple of ways to get it running:
(1) Set up GPU passthrough in VirtualBox (I've never tried this)
(2) Provide a software renderer (this is what I did when developing the updater in VirtualBox a few years ago; I found an llvmpipe gallium DLL somewhere and got it running with that)

If you actually want to play the game, you will need a real hardware graphics implementation.

What are you running in VirtualBox for? We have Windows, Linux, and Mac releases available.

ha and I use Virtual Box to do tests of uh "stuff" I know it's suspicious... ;)

If your tests require running Unvanquished at a decent frame rate, then that's what you should do. But keep in mind,

https://docs.oracle.com/en/virtualization/virtualbox/6.0/user/guestadd-video.html wrote:

Untrusted guest systems should not be allowed to use the 3D acceleration features of Oracle VM VirtualBox, just as untrusted host software should not be allowed to use 3D acceleration. Drivers for 3D hardware are generally too complex to be made properly secure and any software which is allowed to access them may be able to compromise the operating system running them. In addition, enabling 3D acceleration gives the guest direct access to a large body of additional program code in the Oracle VM VirtualBox host process which it might conceivably be able to use to crash the virtual machine.

If you don't need a good frame rate for your tests or you care more about sandboxing, then you can use the software renderer approach.
