Role of stamina

Post by kharnov »

So, we've removed dodge. What is the point of stamina now? The maximum stamina is extremely high, allowing you to jump all over the place and run around with ease. I'm always sprinting and in the exceedingly rare situations that I run out, it only takes me a few moments to slowly walk around and regain enough stamina to run down the length of another hallway.

Why not get rid of stamina? The three movement speeds (sprinting, running, and walking) can instead factor into things like detection via radar. Someone sprinting around is easier to detect (due to increased thermal signature) and has a harder time detecting hidden aliens, whereas someone walking slowly does not show up as easily and can find aliens with greater ease. Moving at the normal pace would be an average of the two.

Because as someone who is constantly low on stamina, unlimited stamina will give humans a huge mobility advantsge if used properly. Imo this is is a very bad idea.

I think amount of stamina should be dependent on the type of equipment a particular human has. Each weapons and equipments should have some kind of weight penalty. Heavier weapons and equipments should negatively effect the stamina and lighter weapons and equipment would not effect the stamina as much. Also, some equipments should negate the weight penalty of other weapons and equipments. Battle suit for example would negate the weight of the heavy weapons, and possibly give the wearer some stamina boost.

If you remove stamina then you need to reconsider the role of sprinting. Without stamina sprinting becomes the new standard running speed and people would sprint/jump everywhere. Strafe jumping would also become the norm for humans.

The battlesuit and stamina could be rethought. Maybe competely remove stamina and limit the ability to jump somehow?

Remove sprinting altogether. No armor gives you fastest movement, light armor has a slight penalty, battlesuit has the highest penalty.

It's not just about movement speeds, it's about stamina control. Furthermore, I can't imagine why a properly designed battlesuit would slow you down. Seeing as you're in a powered exoskeleton...(not a medieval suit of armor), it should boost your speed/stamina (or at least, not have a detrimental effect). What a battlesuit will do is limit your ability go reach certain places due to size.

Making the heaviest armor also the most agile might be a bad idea. You could give it other enhancements like a jetpack, and radar though. Or visual enhancements like drawing an outline around aliens

Battle suit (aka, exoskeleton power armor) doesn't have to be agile. It would allow a human to run or sprint further distances, not necessarily faster. Also, allow humans to carry heavier weapons and equipments without being slowed down. Penalty for battle suit would be as Ishq mentioned above: "ability to reach certain places due to size" and also inability to crouch.
Heavy armor on the other hand would slow down humans and reduce some stamina.

Yes… choice of equipment causing appropriate weight/stamina/speed penalties sounds good. We should keep stamina.

Debian and Ubuntu packages (squeeze, wheezy, sid; 12.04, 12.10, 13.04) may work on derivatives

OFFEND! … no, that's not right… ATTACK!
