Steam Considerations?

Post by Comet »

Steam is hosting this thing where people vote for the next Steam games. From what I am aware, you can upload any type of game into this contest for a chance to become a Steam game as well as to increase popularity. Even if Unvanquished were not to get votes, it might spark some peoples' interest.

I'd like to know you all's thoughts on this. Also, I do know that Unv isn't quite presentable as of yet. Just thought I'd put it out there :D

I don't think Steam permits open source projects. We will, however, be on Desura once we hit beta.

Yes it does :P

I do recall reading somewhere that they are working on linux support, but that may or may not count.

I think a better way to promote the game would be to constantly talk about it. Make sure to interject it awkwardly into perfectly normal conversations.

Desura sounds like a good platform, but we should also see about getting front page on sites like modDB and videogame blogs.

How about an honorable mention in a news feed via ign, gametrailers, kotaku etc.? Once we hit beta seems like a great way to spark interest amongst gamers out of the loop.

Edit: ign recently had coverage of the soon to go live natural selection 2.

Even if we could get into Steam, it doesn't seem like a very FOSSy thing to do.

Was really just wondering if there were any speculations about it.

Your point? It's free publicity.

It's specifically stated in Steam's TOS that Open Source projects are not allowed. As you can see by the massive number of game devs ravenously attempting to get included on Steam, I don't think asking is going to help.

Unvanquished cannot be and never will be on Steam until either:
1) Steam changes its TOS to allow open source games
or
2) Unvanquished no longer has any code from idTech3, ioQ3, Tremulous, or OpenWolf. This would essentially require a full re-code of the game from its base levels, essentially making a new game.
