Minimap?

Post by MCMic »

Hello,

I've some trouble for finding my way in videogames maps. I've got quite the same problem in real life, finding my way in cities is hard for me.
A lot of Unvanquished maps are way too complicated for me, I spend a lot of time just finding a way from alien base to human base, and then a way back.

So, I was thinking, what about adding a minimap to Unvanquished?

I'm pretty sure it's already planned.

Check the map "crappy" (version one) for tremulous 1.1's zombie mod. That is very simplified. Here's a map:

alien (zombie) base...............................................human base
_____________.........................................____________
|........................|.......................................|.......................|
|........................|_____________________|.......................|
|.........................................................................................|
|........................
___________________.........................|
|.......................|.......................................|........................|
|
________|........................................|____________|

edit: caugh caugh, i thought you meant a 'small map', not a map to navigate with...

The issue is that many maps are multi-level so it's hard to design a minimap that works well.

True, but a bad minimap is better than no minimap at all.

Unvanquished alreay supports places names, I just need some help to figure where they are from each other.

These were automatically generated using q3map2. As you can see, these minimaps are quite confusing and I'm not sure how useful they will be. See if you can identify the maps. We do plan to have minimaps in the future, it is currently uncertain how we plan to generate them. We're investigating several possible methods.

Second one is ATCS, I must say I don't recognise the first one…

I can see the problem ^^
Good luck finding a way to display that…

On Orion, there is a small map displayed on a wall in lobby. Maybe something similar can be done for new maps. Sort of like emergency escape route displayed on many buildings. At least until proper minimaps are implemented in the future.

For multi-level maps, each level should have it's own minimap and loaded on to the HUD when the player is in that particular level.

Grab reality by the balls and squeeeeze!

How do you make those images? I think i've done a partial x-ray like image (tga) of my street-clash map when i had trouble compiling it. It came out as a side-effect from a mistake in the decompilation of the .bsp process i think.
