New default binds

Post by kharnov »

Hi,

I'd like to get to changing the default key bindings that we've inherited to something more consistent with modern expectations. Maybe some other defaults can be changed too later on, but for now I'd like to focus on keys.

So far, I am thinking of the following:

Movement remains WASD and mouse, jumping uses the space bar.
Primary attack remains left mouse button, secondary attack on the right mouse button.
Crouch becomes left control instead of C.
For humans, weapon toggling becomes Q.
Alien tertiary attacks use Q, including barbs.
Both teams can access the buy menu via B.
Grenade throw prefers mouse wheel up, but can use G.
Medkit prefers mouse wheel down, but can use M.
Human sprint is activated by double tapping W instead of hitting X.
The new beacon menu is accessed by hitting Z.

What do you think?

Not a fan.
Shift should be wallwalk and crouch since it's closer.
Q is good for buying since it's close to the movement keys.
Tertiary attacks should be mouse3.
Grenade is fine.
Med is fine too.
I wouldn't recommend using double tap for anything. Use E for sprint.
Beacon menu is fine.

Fan. I thought along similar lines.
The MMB weapon selection is really quite unintuitive, especially since in Trem you only have two weapons to switch between.
Another issue with Trem is the backpacks are in the weapon selection bar at the bottom, which is kind of confusing since they cannot be selected.

I thought about having

<1> Blaster
<2> Weapon
<3> Single Use

But actually I like the idea of having G for throwing grenades (though, I would prefer F for comfort).
Having a switch between weapons button would be nice since it would remove the need for an extra button.
This would also free up all the numeric keys which can then be used to buy loadouts or evolve.
For using medkit i would prefer using X, since it's adjecent to WASD, this is how I always binded it.

I think we should also try to keep to established FPS controls. (like using E for use)
My prefs:

<WASD> move
<SPACE> jump
<CTRL> wallwalk / crouch (I always switch it to shift, but this is more standard)
<C> wallwalk / crouch toggle (if needed)
<X> medkit
<E> Use (Arm) / Evolve
<Q> Switch Weapon / Evolve
<SHIFT> and <ALT> Sprint
<V> Deconstruct / Mark
<G> and <MMB> Grenade / Tertiary fire
<W> Beacon

There's some duplicates in this list, but I don't have any issue with it.

I'm also against double tap, in UT4 which is currently in open pre-alpha they did something heretic by giving dodge it's own key and it's being universally praised as being the best addition to the game since the invention of sliced bread.

One thing I do want is double jump for jetpack, we can keep the hold, but for some reason (playing Tribes?) double jump feels more intuitive.
