Set g_unlagged to 0 on EU server?

Postby Forty-Two » Sun Aug 05, 2012 11:40 am UTC

I haven't been on GPP much as I didn't like it, but when I was there, every server except the NA unlagged server was empty. Therefore, I'd say it's fairly safe to use 1.1 as representative for Tremulous players at this moment.

On Tremulous 1.1, European players generally prefer lagged gameplay over unlagged. Sure, some may play on AA, .: () :. and such servers, but generally, they (we? ><) stick to servers such as Into the Wild and wwF. I don't want to cause a debate as to which is 'better': fact is some people prefer lagged. An obvious disadvantage to it is that ping has a bigger influence on lagged, and therefore the matches are less playable internationally (or maybe intercontinentally would be better suited), but all the international playing seems to happen on US servers.

I've noticed on Unvanquished (even though I haven't got to play on a server with people on it yet) that the EU server is a bit deserted most of the time. This can probably be partially attributed to the fact that we seem to be a conservative bunch when it comes to gaming. But maybe also the absolute presence of unlagged deters some would-be players: personally I find unlagged extremely frustrating, and I know I'm definitely not alone in that. Although I doubt providing a lagged server would suddenly bring forth a surge of European players, I think it could potentially help keep them. If not - the European server seems empty anyway, though that may change later on, of course.

It might be worth a shot to set g_unlagged to 0 on the official EU server, from my pov. However, I realize that this is a pretty big request; I wanted to bring this suggestion to your attention, even if you (understandably) don't want to un-internationalize your official server. But its frequent emptiness, the fact that international matches seem to occur on US servers and the preferences of EU players in Tremulous do provide incentive to consider it, imo. :)

Request granted on grounds of general unpopularity and lack of counter-argumentation.

Fuck lagged really.
Every online game must have its lag compensation system.
European players WITH GOOD CONNECTION tends to prefer lagged.

There's people with shitty ISPs, that live in shitty towns, like me, that cannot have a better connection even paying more.

And 50+ ping with lagged is far from being fair.

Now, if it helps to get more players.... that's another story.
But really, prefer lagged and dont play unlagged ,cuz it's better for fast connections, is selfish.

I believe that, if anything, Official servers should run "default" gameplay/settings and g_unlagged (which changes much how the game feels) defaults to 1. There was "similar" issue about unlagged at GPP EU1 3 years ago, though then people were asking to enable it as game seemed almost unplayable for aliens with g_unlagged 0.

Not sure about this one, but I think I remember Norfenstein stating that the new gameplay is meant to be played with unlagged enabled. Can't really confirm, though seeing that most attacks ranges were nerfed in one way or another, it'd make sense.

The reason why people rarely play on EU is not unlagged being enabled, but the fact that almost nobody is willing to stay there and wait for other players. Things are different with US1 as there are bots that provide entertainment during waiting.

Yes, I agree. GPP and consequently, Unvanquished gameplay was designed with unlagged in mind. Playing lagged will only be frustrating.

And Tremulous 1.1 was designed with lagged in mind, but that doesn't stop US players from playing unlagged regardless, because they prefer it. Consequently, it'd be safe to say that for US servers, unlagged is 'the default' in Trem 1.1, even if it was designed otherwise. For European players, it's the other way around here: lagged gameplay is 'the standard'. Lagged players find the effect unlagged has on the gameplay very frustrating.
I suppose there are more US players than EU players in Unvanquished, but is that a reason to impose their standard on people with a different standard? I'm assuming the EU server is there for EU players: why not use their preference/default setting, that they find less frustrating than the globally more popular, different setting?
Also, I didn't say, or at least didn't mean, that lagged would attract more players. I said that it might help keep them, because it's not frustrating for them to play. I mentioned the server was empty as a reason it couldn't hurt much to try.

You are talking about 1.1 gameplay which has very little to do with GPP/Unv. I also wouldn't say that it was designed with lagged in mind. I would rather say it was actually meant for unlagged but it was poorly implemented resulting in both lagged/unlagged feeling weird.

Nonetheless Unv gameplay is based on GPP. And there are no servers with unlagged disabled for a reason. Of course I don't mind trying disabling it, though it's been done and failed and I don't see a reason to repeat same mistake.

And finally, all that lagged/unlagged mess brings further confusion to new players, I say we should pick one "version" and stick to it. People preferring the other will just have to deal with it. People played it for years, it can't be that bad.
