Why don't humans kill each other quick?

Why humans don't kill each other with shots in the head without armor? Maybe this whole "alien war" is really a cruel reality show and the "soldiers" are given joke weapons, so that they have some conflict to show and not just whole alien hives being shot up in seconds?
