Here's a quick kickstart on the Chaingun concept. Just to get ideas flowing.

I added a scope for fun, does it need one?

The attachment chaingun.jpg is no longer available

(how do I unmake this thread "aborted")

The chaingun is really fast firing gun, which means that it is very inaccurate. I don't think a scope will help :p

I wonder how it would look with hanging ammo belts somewhere.

It needs a much bigger ammo carrier, e.g. a drum magazine:

The barrel looks a bit outdated and does not really explain why the weapon has a very high spread. Maybe try something that's more similiar to a minigun (but not quite as heavy):

(Actually this one even looks like you could carry it, apart from requiring external ammo supply.)

I would prefer it if the weapon is not absurdly heavy but designed in a way that a strong human can carry and shoot it even without a supportive suit.

I like Alex's single-barrel approach more than any multi-barrel one.

You want an assault rifle?

Look at modern light machine guns. They are single-barreled.

Ok, let's try not to get into discussions here (that's what IRC is good for). It should be clear that the the chaingun has to look heavy but portable. Let's also assume the battlesuit holds it in the same way as the unarmored human, since cron is right that the new battlesuit will look more like a suit and less like a mech. The actual design of the gun should be up to Alex, our job is just to provide the best possible inspiration and make sure the basic requirements are met.
