A minimap would help to orientate on a new Map or just to find the new base or Teammates.
The idea is that Mappers add a top view Image of the Map to the Map like the Levelshot.
In the Game is the Players position Shown with a White dot. Other Humans are Blue dots.
If a Human is higher your position he is a up Arrow. On a lower position a down Arrow.
A small Icon of the Reactor represents the Human Base.
Alien Players are Red and got the OM and Eggs displayed.
If there is no Minimap placed into a Map it could look like this:
Sure without a image is it not so useful as with one.
The images are just to illustrate how it could look. I made a Screenshot of Sirius from outside the Map for these Images.
I'm sure Mappers got better ways to create images of Map's.
To implement this in the game the Code would not much different to the Human Helmet except the dots are placed on a 2d area.
This is actually a very good idea. Maybe you can add markings onto the map for scrims? Draw an arrow pointing at the corridors you'll be moving down, circle areas you'll build in, etc.
i dont know if drawing on the map would be a good idea. But the VSay commands could interact with the minimap. Wen a Player says enemyisnear there could be image drawed on the map where his cross hair pointing to.

More like at the position the player is in himself. Imagine someone who likes making fun of others by dragging his team to another end of an open (wide-spaced) map.
