Surface Types

Post by Spiney »

Have the ability to define surface types in the shader (default, metal, ground and snow seem like a decent set).
Then have decals, particles and sounds be configurable depending on the surface type.

This already exists for metal ("surfaceparm metalsteps") and influences the step sound. Adding more options sounds great in theory and kangz might want to make room for something like this when he rewrites the shader system but the issue will be that we don't even have good impact sounds and decals for the default and metal materials. If you think of any kind of surface, you'll want different step sounds for different alien classes as well as for the battlesuit and reguar human shoes. The same goes for the different types of projectiles and impact effects. All in all, this is a lot of work and requires a sound and a particle effects designer who'd be willing to tackle it.

Prove it! If you think you're up to one of these tasks that'd be quite helpful and you could add additional sounds matching the surface types you'd like to see. Actually, if you replace any set of similiar sounds, particles or decals in the game with a consistent set of non-horrible (= better than now) quality assets under a suitable license, that would be of great use.
