How does this game looks so beautiful!?

Post by Comet_ »

When I see screen caps posted from others they make this game look amazing. I have this game cranked up to max and cant quite seem to match the moodyness and sharpness that other can get in their screen caps. So my question is (probably a dumb noob question), how do you do this!? As you know Im making videos on Unvanquished and I want them to be as representative of the game in the current state as possible~!

Perhaps we have a bunch of artists among us, much aperture and very shutter speed and other jargon  I have noticed that their gamma is lower than mine usually and the main difference between the screenshots and what I get is usually the dynamic lighting/lighting effects.

BTW, I'm also a photographer IRL so I'm trained to get the right angle, the right point of view, and the right framing to get the better a scene can do, distilling the better from the curves of the objects in the scene, the colors and the lighting. Badly, you can't do with video what I do with still pictures. Also, I always takes my screenshot the way they tell a story.

For example, it took me 4 hours to do this dozen of Warsow screenshots: http://linuxfr.org/news/warsow-2-en-rou ... la-liberte
Yes, all the maps and the characters was especially chosen for each scenes, and see how colors alternate between screenshots, yes, I also took time for that arrangement (while having the screenshots in the order of what the text says). So, theses screenshots are more the results of my mind than the engine. Knowing that your mind do more than your hardware is something very important in photography.

You can also look at these FlightGear screenshots: http://linuxfr.org/news/flightgear-3-0- ... -son-envol
Or these ET: Legacy (Wolf: ET) screenshots: http://linuxfr.org/news/enemy-territory ... resistance
Or these Xonotic / ET:Legacy / Unvanquished screenshots: http://linuxfr.org/news/et-legacy-xonot ... ur-rentree
Yes, all the element on the first Xonotic screenshot were minded, having the extra armor bonus, having the extra life bonus, while running in this room while the force bonus is spawning in the next room, with the exact right angle to see the notification, and yes, it needed to time the bonus pickup to be able to get the extra armour and the extra life almost at their maximum (so the reader notices it) while the force bonus is right to spawn. This screenshot was taken to show the new notification system for the bonus (the timing on the left) so it was good for the reader to see the force bonus timing expiring in the hud while the force bonus is spawning, and this screenshot was taken on this map because it was a new map so I did'nt have to make two screenshots. Yes, this kind of screenshot can tell a more longer story a video can.

Edit: another example with The Dark Mod (only half the screenshots are mine, but the other guy made a very good job too): http://linuxfr.org/news/the-dark-mod-2- ... standalone

This another set of screenshots are not from a game but from a demo: http://linuxfr.org/users/illwieckz/jour ... on-cerveau
Even if I have no free movement to chose the viewing angle etc. (it's like a video), the choice of the image, the order etc. is fully minded.

I guess I can make every game look amazing if there is a minimal quality.

But I really don't know how to make a game looking amazing on a video, it's another job.

To answer to that:

I have noticed that their gamma is lower than mine usually and the main difference between the screenshots and what I get is usually the dynamic lighting/lighting effects.

I don't know for the gamma, but yes, I've seen kharnov making a special effort to do screenshot with realtime shadow and yes it improves a lot. But this effect is broken on my side (it can works in still images, but not in videos). For example this screenshot looks very weird without shadows (it looks like models are floating). I guess in moving image that floating effect disappears so not having realtime shadows is not the worst problem in video, but if you can get them, please use them for promotional materiel ! :-)

What will be your videos about? :D

Appreciate the advice. The videos are on anything. The videos could be of good games I can get in or if I want to say something in particular that can't be said or displayed over forums text. For example, my video on how flames were broken: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xDg5-rCqzo

I'm uploading the videos on my channel and post them in the topic below so you all can see them if you are interested and so I don't spam the forums with my videos. Haven't done one in a while because my recording software was broken with Unv in the recent update. However, I got it figured out and better optimized; I hope I can get in some good games this weekend to fill the gap of no uploads :)

I think alien buildables just need a health pool buff in general. Alien bases just goes down so easily and are actually quite difficult to expand compared to human bases (which is the opposite of Tremulous, which is very campy on the human side).
